Vtec Group – Our Sustainable Journey

At Vtec we are on a journey towards creating a more sustainable environment for both the projects we support our clients with and our people.

The basic objectives of sustainability at Vtec are to reduce consumption of non-renewable resources, minimise waste, and create healthy, productive environments. For the projects we support our clients well, sustainable design seeks to reduce negative impacts on the environment, and the health and comfort of building occupants, thereby improving building performance.

We believe in making it a priority to purchase raw materials and products from suppliers that use environmentally responsible manufacturing techniques. This helps towards operating more sustainably within the industry.

WHAT ARE WE DOING AT VTEC TO MINIMISE OUR IMPACT?

We recognise the value of sourcing responsibly and do our utmost to follow sustainable practices as far as possible throughout the manufacturing process. For example:

We source raw materials locally where possible

We collaborate to optimise deliveries to keep our carbon footprint as low as possible

We use energy-efficient LED lighting in the warehouse and offices, with occupation sensors in ancillary areas

We burn wood waste to heat our production and warehouse facilities

We use recycled boxes to send out samples and orders, and all our delivery pallets are made locally

We encourage the return of our samples after use – for reusing and recycling to minimise waste

Many of our Systems are FSC® Certified or PTFC Certified (see below)

Our Acoustic Backing for our Systems is eco-friendly in its validity with an attached Environmental Product Declaration EPD®

The material for our FR MDF conforms to the E1 Formaldehyde Levels and also complies with CARB phase 2 requirements. This E1 Class also meets BREEAM requirements, as does FSC® certification.

FSC® CERTIFIED & PEFC CERTIFIED

We recognise how critical it is to support cleaner and greener architectural solutions and have made it easy to specify more sustainable materials in your specification choices.

FSC® CERTIFICATION

We are FSC® certified (FSC® C160047)

The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) is a global, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion of responsible forest management worldwide. FSC® defines standards based on agreed principles for responsible forest stewardship that are supported by environmental, social, and economic stakeholders. To learn more, visit www.fsc.org.

Responsible sourcing of wood can benefit construction projects in many ways. Wood is more carbon and energy efficient in comparison to other building materials. However, wood can originate from unsustainable forest management practices which can undermine its benefits. This risk can be mitigated by sourcing FSC® certified wood. FSC® is the world’s most trusted sustainable forest management solution that adds environmental, social and economic benefits to construction projects.

WHAT DOES FSC® MANAGED TIMBER MEAN FOR THE SPECIFIER?

The initial key to sustainable timber is good forest management. When you specify FSC® timber, you can be confident that the manufacturer sources responsibly from a well-managed source that complies with the strict criteria that must be met to earn FSC® certification. These are based on ten core principles that cover issues ranging from environmental impact to community relations and workers’ rights to monitoring and assessment processes. An independent organization audits the forest or supply chain to ensure it meets the FSC® standards.

FSC® 10 PRINCIPLES

  • Compliance with laws
  • Workers’ rights and employment conditions
  • Indigenous Peoples’ rights
  • Community relations
  • Benefits from the forest
  • Environmental values and impact
  • Management planning
  • Monitoring and assessment
  • High conservation values
  • Implementation of management activities

Some products in our Slats, Beams and Acoustics range are available as FSC® Certified. Please talk to us about your specific requirements prior to quotation.

PEFC™ CERTIFICATION

We are PEFC™ certified (INT-PEFC/COC-002119).

The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) cares for forests globally and locally, working to protect forests by promoting sustainable forest management through certification. This means we can all benefit from the many products that forests provide now while ensuring these forests will be around for generations to come. To learn more, visit www.pefc.org.

SPECIFYING VTEC PRODUCTS

We take great care across our product range to source and produce all of our products as responsibly as possible, so you can be confident in specifying us. Here is a brief overview of our systems, and how we support our clients by operating more sustainably across the construction industry.

Slats, Beams and Acoustics

We work with trusted partners to source our timber. Some products in this range, including MaxiBeam, SupaSlat and Supacoustic are available as FSC® Certified (see below).

EchoTone is a P.E.T.-made acoustic absorber that is made up of 60% recycled materials and is 100% recyclable. Please visit our individual product pages to learn more about their systems and how we work towards providing designers with sustainable solutions.

Texture Wall Panels

Our Texture wall panels are produced from original walls with exact natural textures and features. They contain in excess of 50% natural pigments, oxides and minerals. The large panel size achieves coverage quickly and easily. Our technical team produce panel layouts to ensure the most effective use of panels for a smooth installation with minimal waste and reduced cost. As they are less than half the weight of real material, that also means a reduced carbon footprint in shipment to site and no need for mortar mixing or wet trades. The panels are also reusable, contributing to a more circular economy of construction materials.
